At 12pm today, the Boundary Commission published its draft plans for changes to Parliamentary Boundaries.
The announcement of the draft plans is just the start of a 12-week consultation period which includes public hearings across the country. This itself is just the start of a process which will last two years with a final result in September 2018.
The proposal for our Ward is quite dramatic.
The proposal is to move it as a whole Ward (that makes a change !) to Bedford and Kempston constituency.
There are undoubtedly many plusses and minuses to this proposal, but there is one plus for you (but not necessarily me !) that you may wish to consider.
The current Bedford and Kempston constituency is one of the tightest marginal seats in the whole of the UK.
The current Mid Beds constituency, which we are currently in, is one of the safest seats in the whole of the UK. When I stood as the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Mid Beds in the 1997 Blair landslide, it still recorded a Tory majority of 7,090 votes.
Should our Ward move into Bedford and Kempston constituency, I have no doubt in my mind that our Ward will get greater attention from the other parties. That can only be a good thing for democracy. When was the last time we heard from any other political party around here outside of election time ? Never !!
It should also be borne in mind that this has no implications whatsoever for Council services such as planning or road maintenance. It is entirely separate from Council services considerations.
