Excessive speed in Elstow is not unique - many villages have the same problem. But ours is compounded by the busy Cowbridge junction (Ampthill Road - A6) - the many vehicles coming through the village mornings and late afternoons are not residents of Elstow but drivers using Elstow as a 'rat-run', so as to avoid those traffic lights.
A small volunteer group have formed recently to operate a digital speed indicator, called 'Speedwatch' which clearly shows the speed of the approaching vehicle large illuminated numbers telling us and the driver the speed they are travelling at. This is operated in the early morning and late evening when traffic is at is height.
Our last Speedwatch was on 4 days during the week 3 June to 10 June.
The number of vehicles that went through the village on those 4 days was 561 (morning and evening) with 87 exceeding the 30 mph speed limit. We had vehicles driving in excess of 43mph, with one car doing 52 mph - disgraceful!
All speeding vehicles are written to by the police warning them then that, if they are caught on other occasions, they are open to prosecution.
We would like to do more sessions of Speedwatch in Elstow but we just do not have sufficient numbers of volunteers. We must continue use to emphasis that speeding in Elstow is not acceptable. So, please do think about volunteering for what is an important function - it only takes up a couple of hours, mornings or evenings.

This site is launched today, 7th July, following a suggestion from a parish councillor that, although there are several websites about specific places and groups in Elstow, there was no site that linked everything together.
I am open to suggestions as to what else might be usefully added to this site. If you have any good ideas, use the Contact form to get in touch.
